Description:

Modern movement tracking technologies enable acquisition of high-quality data about movements of the players and the ball in the course of a football match. However, there is a big difference between the raw data and the insights into team behaviors that analysts would like to gain. To enable such insights, it is necessary first to establish relationships between the concepts characterizing behaviors and what can be extracted from data. This task is challenging since the concepts are not strictly defined.

9th Italian Information Retrieval Workshop (IIR) 2018
Description:

Online social media are a major venue of public discourse today, hosting the opinions of hundreds of millions of individuals. Social media are often credited for providing a technological means to break information barriers and promote diversity and democracy. In practice, however, the opposite effect is often observed: users tend to favor content that agrees with their existing world-view, get less exposure to conflicting viewpoints, and eventually create “echo chambers” and increased polarization.

Description:

Data science created unprecedented opportunities but also new risks. Data Science techniques might expose sensitive traits of individuals and invade their privacy, and this information could be used to discriminate people based on their presumed characteristics, or profiles. Gartner stated that, within 2018, half of business ethics violations will occur through improper use of Big Data analytics. Often, the achievements of data science are the result of re-interpreting available data for analysis goals that differ from the original reasons motivating data collection.

Description:

This tutorial presents a systematic review of polarization as manifested online, and in particular on social media. In the first part, we clarify the concept of polarization and the related nomenclature, drawing from the social and political sciences. Subsequently, we review algorithmic techniques for detection, quantification, and mitigation of polarization. We conclude the tutorial by presenting open challenges and promising research directions for Web Scientists.
