Description:

The workshop Complexity72h is an interdisciplinary event whose aim is to bring together young researchers from different fields of complex systems. Inspired by the 72h Hours of Science, participants will form working groups aimed at carrying out a project in a three-day time, i.e. 72 hours. Each group's goal is to upload on the arXiv a report of their work by the end of the event. A team of tutors will propose the projects, and assist and guide each group in developing their project.

Description:

This tutorial presents a systematic review of polarization as manifested online, and in particular on social media. In the first part, we clarify the concept of polarization and the related nomenclature, drawing from the social and political sciences. Subsequently, we review algorithmic techniques for detection, quantification, and mitigation of polarization. We conclude the tutorial by presenting open challenges and promising research directions for Web Scientists.

Computational thinking is a mental process for solving problems through an ordered series of precise instructions, the algorithm. Every time we use a smartphone to make a phone call, take a picture, listen to music or access the Internet, we put a very complicated «computation» into action, allowing us to work on sounds, images and character sequences.

AISB conference workshop on Emotion Modeling and Detection in Social Media and Online Interaction
Description:

Recent events have shown that poltical outcomes such as elections can be significantly influenced by social media. Tools for collecting, monitoring and interpreting the discussions on social media, as well as better understanding of the ways in which different messages should be portrayed for maximum impact, are thus in high demand. In this talk, I will introduce the GATE social media toolkit, which provides the whole lifecycle of social media analysis, from twitter collection to analysis and finally indexing, querying and visualisation of results.

Description:

Large networks are being generated by applications that keep track of relationships between different data entities. Examples include online social networks recording interactions between individuals, sensor networks logging information exchanges between sensors, and more. There is a large body of literature on mining large networks, but most existing methods assume either static networks, or dynamic networks where the network topology is changing.
