Description:

We present two different lines of research conducted in the Data Mining group of the Department of Computer Science in Aalto University. First, we consider the problem of automatically linking historical records in order to reconstruct family trees. The problem leads to a number of interesting computational questions, including record linkage, alignment of multiple partially-overlapping networks, and active network alignment.

KNOWledge Discovery from Mobility and Transportation Systems
Description:

The recent technological advances on telecommunications create a new reality on mobility sensing. Nowadays, we live in an era where ubiquitous digital devices are able to broadcast rich information about human mobility in real-time and at a high rate. Such fact exponentially increased the availability of large-scale mobility data which has been popularized in the media as the new currency, fueling the future vision of our smart cities that will transform our lives. The reality is that we just began to recognize significant research challenges across a spectrum of topics.

"Network science, network analysis, and network mining are new scientific topics that emerged in recent years and are growing quickly. Instead of studying the properties of entities, network science focus on the interaction between these entities. The tremendous quantity of relational data that become available (Online Social Networks, cell phones, the Internet and the Web, trip datasets, etc.) encourage new research on the topic. In the last years, we witnessed a shift from static network analysis to dynamic ones, i.e., the study of networks whose structure changes over time.

Description:

Retail data are one of the most requested commodities by commercial companies. Unfortunately, from this data, it is possible to retrieve highly sensitive information about individuals. Thus, there exists the need for accurate individual privacy risk evaluation. In this paper, we propose a methodology for assessing privacy risk in retail data. We define the data formats for representing retail data, the privacy framework for calculating privacy risk and some possible privacy attacks for this kind of data.

Description:

A growing number of actors perpetrate cyber attacks to various targets, be them public entities, ISPs, enterprises or citizens. Supported by governments or aiming at criminal activities, attackers dispose of channels for sharing and obtaining undisclosed vulnerabilities, attack toolkits and information. On the other hand, attack targets need to react quickly and effectively but they risk to be alone if they do not join forces with others. However timely reactions depend on the quality and timeliness of interactions among peers (e.g., CERTs, public security bodies, ISPs, service providers).

Description:

This tutorial will introduce the concepts of social media and sentiment analysis from unstructured text. It will first introduce the concept of social media analysis, showing how this form of noisy text requires different solutions from traditional text analysis, with practical examples and exercises showing how this can be achieved. This leads into the more specialised task of sentiment analysis: the problem of extracting opinions automatically from text.

Description:

At the university's Headstart Summer School in July 2017, 42 students (age 16 and 17) from all over the UK were taught to write Java programs to control Lego robots, using input from the robots (such as the sensor for detecting coloured marks on the floor) as well as operating the motors to move and turn.  (The university provided a custom Java library for this.) Secondary school students have been taught to program Lego robots and tweet commands to them with the GATE Cloud Twitter Collector.
