Strengthen the central hub
Welcome to the 14th issue of the SoBigData Magazine!
This issue arrives at a defining moment, marking the closing phase of the SoBigData.it project. Backed by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) under NextGenerationEU, the project was focussed on evolving the Italian SoBigData node across multiple fronts: from infrastructure and service development to community building, training, and policy engagement. Strategic investments strengthened both the national node and the infrastructure as a whole amplifying SoBigData’s role and influence across both the Italian and European research landscapes.
Capacity building continues to be a central pillar of our mission. In this issue, we focus on training programmes that combine flexible online learning with hands-on experiences, enabling learners to move seamlessly from foundational knowledge to applied work with real-world datasets and research challenges.
Beyond these core developments, this issue features an in-depth article on the SCIANCE project, presenting the rationale behind its funding by the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD). The article examines the needs the project addresses, its key objectives, expected impacts, and the stakeholders it aims to serve, while outlining the first steps of its roadmap. Special focus is given to the project's connection with RAISE and to the broader effort to build a coordinated European capacity for AI-enabled science. Within SCIANCE, SoBigData serves as scientific coordinator for the Social Sciences and Humanities domain.
Moreover, in this issue, the SoBigData Law recurring column examines the Digital Omnibus and explains why the evolving European debate is crucial for researchers, public administrations, and organisations balancing data governance, compliance, and innovation.
We hope you enjoy this issue and invite you to share it within your networks and to stay connected with upcoming activities.
