SoBigData @BIGSSS Computation Social Science Summer School on Migration in Sardinia
SoBigData was at the BIGSSS Computation Social Science Summer School on Migration in Sardinia, Italy.
The Summer School brings together interdisciplinary researchers to work on seven projects concerning migration topics. SoBigData funded two travel grants for female participants in the school.
The SoBigData infrastructure with its datasets and methods related to migration were presented to participants in a seminar with the title: Big Data Mining and Machine Learning for Migration Studies.
The talk, given by Alina Sirbu, introduced the SoBigData project to the students, by giving a high level overview of the SoBigData Consortium and Infrastructure. Special emphasis was given to datasets and methods relevant to Migration Studies. Specifically, the Twitter dataset and its use in the study of sentiment related to the refugee crisis and in the creation of a Superdiversity Index was presented. Research on migrant integration using the COOP dataset was also included. Furthermore, the talk described methods available in the VREs to download Twitter data (Twitter Monitor, Hybrid Crowdsensing), study mobility (M-Atlas, UMA), and work with text (TagMe, GATE). Finally, Explainability methods were described, and the MOOC on Privacy was introduced.
