The world news tells us about peace

Previous research (recently published in EPJ Data Science) demonstrates that the official Global Peace Index (GPI) [1] can be captured at a higher frequency through GDELT [2], a digital news database. Undoubtedly, digital data harnessed with AI tools contribute to advances in well-being studies, including peace.

Bottom-up Street View: Data collection strategy for crowdsourcing street view imagery in Pristina, Kosovo

Bottom-up Street View aims to create guidelines for the citizen-led collection of street view imagery. The City of Prishtina was selected as a case study given that it remains relatively unexplored by Google Maps’ Street View. In response to the rising pressure of urbanization following Kosovo’s civil war, Prishtina green spaces were largely paved over, leaving an impervious, artificial landscape. The proposed guidelines will cater to pedestrians and cyclists, exposing public spaces such as parks and pedestrian areas that are often omitted from Google Maps’ Street View.

Discrimination prevention in data mining

Discrimination consists of unfairly treating people on the basis of their belonging to a specific group. Discrimination often leads denying to members of one group opportunities that are available to other groups. There is a list of antidiscrimination laws designed to prevent discrimination on the basis certain attributes (e.g., race, religion or gender) in various settings (e.g., employment, credit, insurance, etc.).

Physiological recovery among workers in long-distance sleddog race: a case study on female veterinarians in Finnmarksløpet

Veterinarians are subjected to levels of work-related stress comparable to that experienced by other health-professionals (1–7).

Why do we move? The Deep Gravity algorithm explains mobility flows using Artificial Intelligence

The traditional model used for the generation of synthetic mobility flows is the "gravity" model. Inspired by Isaac Newton's law of universal gravitation, it establishes that the mobility flow between two places (for example, two neighbourhoods of a city) is proportional to their population and inversely proportional to their geographical distance. Unfortunately, in practice, the gravitational model is often inaccurate because it is based on only two variables (distance and population) and is unable to capture complex relationships between them.

Information dynamics of price and liquidity around the 2017 Bitcoin markets crash

Cryptocurrencies are a novel financial instrument, whose uniqueness lies in a novel distributed ledger technology that serves as a public database of executed transactions. They are also characterised by high price fluctuations, price bubbles, and sudden price crashes.

A Deep Gravity model for mobility flows generation

The movements of individuals within and among cities influence critical aspects of our society, such as well-being, the spreading of epidemics, and the quality of the environment. When information about mobility flows is not available for a particular region of interest, we must rely on mathematical models to generate them.
